Lost? Don't know where you are? North is thattaway.
54A simple trick to find North
Should you become lost, what do you do? Experts say that the first thing is DON'T PANIC! Sit down and think. Where were you going? Do you know or did you know how to get there? Do you know where North is? Are there any landmarks that you recognize?
Should you become lost one of the first thing you need to do is get your bearings. Where is North and what direction do I want to go in? So, to find North there are many ways. Pull out your trusty compass and soon you'll be on your way. Oh, you don't have a compass? No worries, you can use your watch. Simply point the hour hand at the... Oh, it's a digital watch. Well, that won't work. Ok, find a tree with some moss... No trees?
Well, are there any rocks, stones, dirt clods, sticks or anything like that? Plenty? Good. Take a stick and stick it into the ground so it stands straight up in the air. Note where the end of the shadow that the stick casts in the sunlight by placing a stone or dirt clod at the tip of the shadow. Wait about ten to fifteen minutes and mark the tip of the shadow again. Draw a straight line between the two stones and bisect the line (cut the line in half) with either the stick or another drawn line perpendicular to the first line. You should have made a plus sign or a cross. + The bottom of the plus sign is south. It should be pointing in the general direction of the sun. The top of the plus sign is pointing in the general direction of North.
You can do this anywhere you have sunlight. Don't have a stick? Use your shadow. Just mark where you"re standing and the tip of your shadow. Sit in some shade for about ten to fifteen minutes, then go back to where you stood the first time and mark the tip of your shadow again.
